Crossrail Sources Europe’s Largest Construction Project

In 2012 four pairs of 1,000-tonne, £10m tunnel boring machines, giant mechanical moles with the canteen and toilet facilities of a small ship, started chewing through the subterranean mud. TfL Rail was an intermediate brand name which was introduced in May 2015 and discontinued in May 2022. It was used by TfL on services between Paddington and Heathrow Terminal 5 and Reading, as well as trains between Liverpool Street and Shenfield. The Abbey Wood to Paddington section opened to passengers on 24 May 2022, although initially trains did not run on Sundays to allow for further testing, nor did they call at Bond Street, which opened on 24 October 2022.
